Jess
Jesminder “Jess” Bhamra, played by Parminder Nagra, is the female protagonist in this film.
Jess is a kind and quiet Indian girl who has a real talent for football. Jess is more modernised than her parents and even more than her sister. However, she is coming to age where she has to stop playing “childish” games and start becoming a proper Indian woman. But she wants to still play, even if it means playing behind her parent’s backs.
It also just so happens that her talent catches the eye of a girl called Jules. Jules offers her a spot on the girl’s football team. Although jess knew her parents wouldn’t be thrilled, she said yes.
Throughout the events in the movie, jess matures into a woman. Not the woman her parents wanted her to be, but the woman she wants to be.
She goes Germany and America, she gets a boyfriend and she plays football for a career. Jess defied stereotypes and expectations, and followed her dreams.
