“Sometimes to follow your dreams you've got to bend the rules...”
Bend it like beckham is a story about a culture, love, misunderstandings and football.
Set in Hounslow, England, the story follows an Indian teenage girl called Jesminder “Jess” Bhamra. She is a massive fan of soccer/football (and David Beckham), but her parents, Mr and Mrs Bhamra, believe that all Indian girls should become respectable housewives, and disapprove of Jess's passion for soccer. Jess is torn between trying to please her parents and her love of soccer.
The real trouble starts, however, when Jess meets Juliette "Jules" Paxton. Jules is English and like Jess, she dreams to play soccer professionally, though her mother - again, like Jess's - wants her to become more womanly and act like a "proper girl". Jules convinces Jess to joins a girl’s football team - without Jess's parents' knowledge.
But soon, Jess’s parents find out, Jess and Jules have a falling out over their coach Joe, Jules’s mum, Paula, is under the impression that Jess and Jules are lesbians, and the women's soccer finals are on Jess's sister’s wedding day.
It all ties together at the end - not only do Jess and Jules (who make up and become friends again) win the soccer finals (Mr Bhamra allows Jess go to attend the second half of the match), they both receive scholarships to play professional football in America… and Jess’s parents let her go!
